BIOGRAPHY of zZARÁ, visual artist (16/05/2021)
zZARÁ is a Swiss artist born in Burgdorf / Berne and has studied Fine Arts, Geography/Geology, Sociology and Pre-history and earned a B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Bern.
He began his most peculiar artistic journey in the early seventies with an experimental architectural project of considerable sociological interest, working closely with architects from Geneva.
His personal development was influenced by his study tours that took him to the deserts and oases of Iran and the Upper Orinoco jungle of Colombia, experiences that marked the later development of his art.
He engaged in scientific work in Italy and Colombia and headed Swiss and Spanish institutions for 23 years. Although he worked as an artist during all those years creating a significant body of work, his other professional obligations left him with little time for public exhibitions.
His most important development as a visual artist began in the 90s in Spain but it wasn’t until 2004 that he devoted all of his energy to art.
16Until 2006 he took inspiration from any image, symbol or object which he then transformed and modified into very personal artistic expressions. His expression ranged from minimalist paintings to more complex works and he used surprising and unexpected materials and techniques to reinforce the expressive capacity of his work. He frequently used objects and materials of all kinds, different colours of sand from geological sediments found in Spain, ground limestone, kaolin, varnish, enamel, wax, synthetic resin, silicone and various chemicals. In 2007 and 2008 he worked mostly with aluminium, cutting and attaching archaic signs to wood or canvas allowing him to physically manipulate his paintings with the intention of reinforcing the psychological content of his work with reflections of light. In his travels through China with its approximately 500 languages and dialects, he was fascinated that people could efficiently communicate with one another thanks to Chinese character-based writing (logographic type sinograms) and he wanted to show that signs were used for communication prior to language and that languages are alive because they are constantly evolving. |

In 2009/2010 he continued with the sociological concept of communication, focusing on the subject of SMS (text messaging) and worked mostly with aluminium plates in two and three dimensional works.
He thus proved that young people’s SMS texts, with their abbreviations, mistakes and word creations are very similar to archaic signs and cannot be understood without special knowledge.
From 2011 to 2014 he focused on experimenting with new expressions. The result was ‘HUELLAS’ (tracks) on paper, wood and canvas, ‘DAY—NIGHT’ works that look different in the dark and paintings and sculptures in aluminium such as ‘PERFORATIONS’ and ‘BUMPS and BULGES’ which are metaphors of the crisis, i.e. the economic and social situation affecting Spain and the rest of the world.
After that he focused his attention on the creation of ‘MULTIPOSS’. Through these small aluminium sculptures which can be modified into many different figures, zZARÁ encouraged spectators to experiment and develop their creative capacity given that this very creativity and innovation are needed to get us out of the crisis. Through other ‘MULTIPOSS’ which includes the words ‘WHO ARE YOU’ in multiple languages, he suggests that people should feel very proud about speaking one of the 7,000 little known languages as their mother tongue, although it is also important to know one of the universal languages to be able to get by in the world.
Starting in 2015/16, zZARÁ interacts with visitors at his performances. He has built a 5.5 metre-high tripod from which he drops large stones onto aluminum plates producing enormous holes, bumps and bulges. He also shoots his PAIN BALLS (bullets that produce PAIN) at the plates with a pistol like those used in Paintball. He then applies a mix of spray paint colours on the entire plate, rinses the oily substance from the dents and transforms those dents into their negative image. This prozess was repeated two or three times until the work was completed.
In his workshop, on the back of these metaphorical works made with the help of the audience, he attaches loudspeakers and a microcomputer developed by Dr. Frank Zaugg, a scientist and researcher in Silicon Valley, which is activated by means of sensors.
People who are looking at a work or who walk by thus trigger the recorded voices of participants at the artist’s performances and the voices of world-renowned personalities speaking about the critical situation we are currently facing and issues that are of concern to everyone today.
Since 2016/2017, zZARÁ has focused on creating works based on the concept of BLACK HOLES. In his imagination, and as a metaphor, everything negative that the artist has criticized since 2015 (viral infections, unemployment, poverty, war, violence, misery, corruption, torture, betrayal, etc.) is now transferred to the universe in the hope that at some moment in time they will enter the orbit of Black Holes and remain trapped there eternally. This is the artist’s way of metaphorically suggesting that only positive things should survive in the world such as life free of viral disease, peace, justice, tolerance, security, education, culture, creativity, hope, understanding etc. Negative and positive things are presented in these works with symbols, letters, words spoken or projected with light on the surface of the paintings, and the people who walk by trigger voices that express what they are thinking or concerned about.
The works created on steel plates produce hundreds of reflections of light, and also reflect their immediate surroundings. This shows the fantastic true colours of the immediate surroundings of BLACK HOLES. zZARÁ has created numerous PRINTMAKINGS of his original steel works. Depending on their location and the light, the works reflect the light and surroundings in a very surprising way, changing the appearance of each one. These changes are captured on the PRINTMAKINGS. The creations are printed on transparent methacrylate with a white background and covered with sheet of PVC. A maximum of five numbered copies are produced.
zZARÁ’s latest plastic works move within the limits of the media and are characterised by the constant invention of new visual tensions with an accent on concept.
Irrespective of the materials or techniques used, the way he freely utilises his pervasive creativity transforms his works into pictures and large objects that provide food for thought.
zZARÁ lives and works in Madrid, Elche / Alicante and Switzerland.
